Outer Ring-Road (ORR) Project Description
The Government of Nepal has planned to construct a 71.93–km–long “Outer Ring-Road (ORR)”between the existing inner ring road and the foot-hills of Kathmandu valley; to effectively manage the growing urbanization, to improve the traffic passage, to develop settlement at the out skirts, to provide an access to remote areas, to disperse the population of the core area, to delineate the urban and rural boundary ,to reduce the traffic congestion and to reduce shifting of population towards the core area.
The proposed project covers three districts; one metropolitan city, one sub metropolitan city and one municipality and 46 VDCs (Fig.1).The project consists of 29 nodal points and covers an influence area of 71.93-km road. An immediate impact area will be within 550 m road corridor which includes 50 m road width.
The proposed road is classified as an urban road, which upon completion the surface will be black- topped and will pass mostly through agricultural land.
The proposed road will have 50 m right of way, a four-lane carriage-way of width 2×7.5m; and a fast- lane with a medium width of 2×1.5m.The road width will consist of four lane service road of 6×2m; slow lane of 2.5×2m; shoulders and parking lane of 1.5×2m; Cycle lane of 2×2m; footpath and green belt of 2.5×2m (Fig.2).
